Why Saratoga, Not Belmont Park?

Belmont Park is closed for construction through 2026; the Belmont Stakes runs at Saratoga Race Course for the third straight year. Governor Hochul has indicated this is the final Saratoga running; Belmont Park is scheduled to reopen in the fall of 2026.

Saratoga is one of the most storied tracks in American racing; but it was built for shorter races than Belmont Park. That's why this year's Belmont runs at 1 1/4 miles instead of the traditional 1 1/2.

The 1 1/4-Mile Distance Change; Why It Matters

The 2026 Belmont runs at 1 1/4 miles; not the traditional 1 1/2 miles; because Saratoga's main track configuration cannot accommodate the longer distance. That's the same distance as the Kentucky Derby, which materially changes the handicapping. Horses who normally need the extra quarter mile (closers, deep stretch-runners) lose that edge.

  • Same distance as the Kentucky Derby; handicapping translates more directly from Churchill Downs.
  • Mid-pack speed favored; deep closers lose the extra quarter mile they typically use to wear down the field.
  • Pace becomes critical; at 1 1/4 miles, an early speed duel can compromise the favorite differently than at 1 1/2.
  • Saratoga surface is different; slightly tighter turns and a different cushion than Belmont Park.

The 2026 Storyline; No Triple Crown, Three-Way Drama

No Triple Crown is possible in 2026. Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo skipped the Preakness, and Preakness winner Napoleon Solo is now targeting the Haskell Stakes in July instead of Belmont. That leaves Belmont as a standalone race; but with a sharp three-way storyline: Derby winner Golden Tempo, Derby runner-up Renegade, and a class of fresh shooters who skipped the Preakness specifically to prep for this.

The result is a uniquely interesting Belmont: the Derby winner returns fresh after skipping Preakness; the Derby runner-up has been training at Saratoga; and a class of fresh shooters (Growth Equity, Talk to Me Jimmy, Ottinho) avoided the Preakness specifically to peak here. With Napoleon Solo (Preakness winner) and Iron Honor (Preakness 2nd) both targeting the Haskell instead, this is a deeper, fresher field than typical post-Preakness Belmonts.

Maryland Sportsbook Markets (Fixed Odds)

Maryland sportsbooks (FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, bet365 and others) post limited fixed-odds Belmont markets in race week:

Strategy for the 2026 Belmont

  • Discount the distance change for closers. Horses bred specifically for 1 1/2 miles lose their structural edge at 1 1/4. Closers with Derby-distance form (Renegade, Chief Wallabee) gain relative value.
  • Respect Saratoga form. Growth Equity won the Peter Pan Stakes at this track. Horses with positive Saratoga history carry less surface risk.
  • Watch the bounce risk on Golden Tempo. The Derby winner is returning off a 5-week layoff after a tough 1 1/4 mile run. Historically, KY Derby winners who skip the Preakness have mixed Belmont form.
  • Exotic value in the longshots. With a wide-open field and no Preakness winner present, exotics (exactas, trifectas) frequently pay outsized returns. Boxing 5-2 favorites with 15-1 longshots is a defensible approach.
  • Forecast and track condition matter. Saratoga can play meaningfully different from a fast track when it gets rain.

Common Questions

2026 Belmont Stakes FAQs

When is the 158th Belmont Stakes?

The 158th Belmont Stakes runs Saturday, June 6, 2026. Post time is 6:41 p.m. ET. Fox Sports carries the live broadcast; Fox Sports app / FanDuel TV streams the race.

Why is the Belmont at Saratoga?

Belmont Park has been closed for construction since 2024 and is scheduled to reopen in fall 2026. The 2026 Belmont Stakes is the third; and Governor Hochul has indicated final; running at Saratoga Race Course before the race returns to Belmont Park.

Why is the 2026 Belmont only 1 1/4 miles instead of 1 1/2?

Saratoga's main track configuration cannot accommodate the traditional 1 1/2 mile distance. The 2026 Belmont runs at 1 1/4 miles; the same distance as the Kentucky Derby. This materially favors horses with mid-pack speed over deep closers.

Is a Triple Crown possible in 2026?

No. Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo skipped the Preakness (which was won by Napoleon Solo at Laurel Park). Justify (2018) remains the most recent Triple Crown winner. The 2026 Belmont is a standalone race.

Is Preakness winner Napoleon Solo running in the Belmont?

No. Trainer Chad Summers confirmed Napoleon Solo will skip the Belmont and target the Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park on July 18 instead. Preakness runner-up Iron Honor is expected to follow the same path.

Can I bet the Belmont from Maryland sportsbooks?

Yes. Maryland sportsbooks (FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, bet365 and others) post limited fixed-odds Belmont markets in race week. For full pari-mutuel wagering (exactas, trifectas, superfectas), use FanDuel Racing, TwinSpires, or TVG.

Who is the 2026 Belmont favorite?

Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo, trained by Cherie DeVaux and ridden by Jose Ortiz, is the projected early-market favorite around 5-2. Derby runner-up Renegade is expected to be the second choice; Peter Pan Stakes winner Growth Equity is the most respected fresh shooter.
