Big payouts, lower probability — bet smart
Parlay Betting Explained
A parlay combines two or more wagers into a single ticket. All legs must win for the parlay to pay. The trade-off: parlay payouts compound multiplicatively, but so does the probability of any single leg losing. Parlays are popular for the dream-of-a-big-cash appeal, but most parlays are negative expected value over time.
How Parlay Math Works
Each leg of a parlay multiplies into the next. For -110 priced legs (the standard for spreads and totals), a 2-leg parlay pays roughly 2.6:1, a 3-leg pays roughly 6:1, a 4-leg pays roughly 11:1.
$100 4-Leg Parlay (all -110)
- Leg 1: Ravens -3.5
- Leg 2: Orioles -1.5
- Leg 3: Wizards Over 220.5
- Leg 4: Capitals ML +120
- Approximate payout if all win: $1,300+ profit
Same Game Parlays (SGPs)
A Same Game Parlay combines multiple wagers from a single game — say, a Ravens spread, the over, and a Lamar Jackson passing yards prop. Sportsbooks calculate correlations and price SGPs lower than the implied multi-game parlay price would suggest.
Why Most Parlays Lose
Each -110 leg has roughly a 50% chance of winning. A 4-leg parlay therefore has roughly a 6.25% chance of cashing — even though the payout suggests a 7.7% break-even rate. The sportsbook's edge compounds with each leg.
- Avoid parlays with 5+ legs — variance crushes you
- Stick to correlated SGPs where logic links the legs (good defense + the under)
- Treat parlays as entertainment, not a profit strategy

Parlays FAQs
How are parlay odds calculated?
Multiply the decimal odds of each leg. For -110 legs (decimal 1.91), a 3-leg parlay pays approximately 1.91 × 1.91 × 1.91 = 6.96 (so $100 returns $696 total, $596 profit).
What is a Same Game Parlay (SGP)?
An SGP combines multiple wagers from a single event — for example, Ravens to win, Lamar Jackson 250+ passing yards, and Mark Andrews to score a TD. Sportsbooks price SGPs based on the correlation between legs.
If one leg pushes, is my parlay dead?
No. A push removes that leg from the parlay; remaining legs still need to win and the parlay payout adjusts down accordingly.
Can I cash out a parlay early?
Most Maryland sportsbooks (FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars) offer cash-out on parlays. The offered amount fluctuates as legs hit and pricing changes.
