Prop Bet Betting Explained
A proposition (prop) bet is any wager not directly tied to the final score or winner. Prop markets cover individual player stats (passing yards, rebounds, strikeouts), game-level events (will there be a safety?), and novelty markets (Super Bowl coin toss, national anthem length).
Player Props
The largest category of prop bets. Sportsbooks post lines on individual players for nearly every measurable stat — passing yards, rushing yards, receiving yards, receptions, points, rebounds, assists, steals, hits, runs, RBIs, strikeouts, saves.
Lamar Jackson props vs Bengals
- Passing Yards Over 245.5 (-110)
- Rushing Yards Over 55.5 (-110)
- Anytime Touchdown Yes (+125)
- First Touchdown Scorer (+1100)
Game Props and Novelty Bets
Game props cover events that aren't player-specific: which team scores first, will the game go to overtime, will there be a safety, total team turnovers, longest touchdown, and similar. Super Bowl novelty markets famously include coin toss, halftime show colors, and Gatorade color.
Where to Find Prop Value
Player props move slower than spreads and totals because each market handles less money. Soft lines persist longer, especially on injured-player replacements, second-string roles, and lower-profile sports.
- Backup QB starting? Check his receivers — props may not have moved
- Star out for NBA team? Bench-player props may be slow to adjust

Prop Bets FAQs
Are college player props legal in Maryland?
No. As of 2024, Maryland prohibits player prop bets on college football players. Team-level props (winner, spread, total, first to score) remain legal.
What's the difference between a prop and a futures bet?
Props settle within a single game or event. Futures settle at the end of a season or tournament (Super Bowl winner, MVP, etc.).
Can I parlay player props?
Yes. Most Maryland sportsbooks let you parlay player props. Same Game Parlays specifically combine props within a single game with adjusted correlation pricing.
What is anytime touchdown scorer?
A wager that a specific player scores at least one touchdown during the game. Pricing varies from short-priced star running backs (-150) to long-priced wide receivers (+800 or more).
